The most popular tour in Costa Rica! This tour immerses you in the rich culture and history of Costa Rica by visiting interesting museums and historical sites of San Jose. It begins with an orientation and drive through San Jose's beautiful Sabana Park. Next, we will take a walking tour through the historic National Theater completed in 1897. The theater is a masterpiece of art and architecture. Afterwards we will visit one of the many unique museums of Costa Rica. We'll continue by heading to the University of Costa Rica, the Supreme Court and various other sites of interest. A brief stop will be made in Moravia, allowing you to browse through the beautiful craft shops located in this area, before returning to your hotel.

Poas volcano is one of the world's largest geysers with an awesome crater, over 1.5 km wide. The volcano is active, but completely safe for viewing. This tour begins with a beautiful drive through the lush coffee plantations and flower farms of the area. In addition to the volcano, Poas National Park is a 9,884 acre preserve with rich tropical vegetation and animal life. The tour includes a short hike to emerald green tropical lagoon through the surrounding forest teeming with typical plant life and exotic birds.

DL7 - Rain Forest Aerial Tram

The Rain Forest Aerial Tram is a unique ecotourism and research park which opened in October 1994. It is located in 454 hectare private natural reserve, 50 minutes ride from San José. The entrance is located five kilometers east from Rio Sucio, on Limon highway. At the Tram, visitors take a trip through the hanging gardens of the canopy (the upper level of the forest). They discover plants and birds usually hidden in the tree tops. The canopy, which is thought to house two-thirds of all rain forest species, is a little known world of incredible beauty and extraordinary biological diversity. The Aerial tram area borders the the northern limit of Braulio Carrillo National Park, one of the biological richest areas of the world.

The trip begins by ascending to the breathtaking summit of Irazu volcano for a view of the massive crater. On a clear day you can actually see the Atlantic and Pacific oceans from the volcano. After an exciting tour of the volcano, we will descend to the historic city of Cartago. Here we will visit the mysterious ancient ruins of the old parish church and view the beautiful Basilica of our “Virgen de los Angeles” with rich displays of carvings, statues and paintings.

On the way to Lankester Gardens we will stop at in Cartago to visit the Basilica de Los Angeles. First day

Departure from San José to the northeastern region of Costa Rica. On the way we will have the opportunity to admire some of the most important coffee and sugar cane plantations in the country. Here we will learn about the history and evolution of these products and their important role in the livelihood of Costa Rica.
12:30 pm
Arrival to San Ramón. Many of Costa Rica's poets, politicians and former presidents were born in this area. Here we will enjoy a delicious lunch at one of the restaurants.
1:20 pm
It's time to turn off the air condition and enjoy the pure air of our country-side. We will pass through the towns of Angeles Norte, La Tigra and Chachagua. These towns are excellent examples of Costa Rican culture and lifestyle.
3:30 pm
We will arrive to your hotel in La Fortuna, the closest town to the Arenal volcano. From here we will drive directly to the Arenal lake. Arenal volcano erupts frequently during the day and night billowing out smoke, lava and a natural display of fireworks. After the brief siestas we can hear the strong roar of the volcano again and again.
4:00 pm
Arrival to Tabacon resort. Time to relax and rest at the therapeutic hot springs located at the base of the volcano, which is probably the best observation point in the area. For those adventure lovers our guide will make a short hike towards the volcano. For those who prefer to relax and enjoy a massage or mud mask, the spa is just a few steps away.

After a delicious dinner we will take you back to your hotel in the area.

We will drive to Caño Negro wildlife refuge. It will definitely be an unforgettable experience for nature lovers. On this refuge there are five main habitats with abundant fauna, specially great diversity of local and migratory birds. Some of the birds that can be observed are the anhinga, roseate spoon-bill, white ibis, northern jacana, woodstork, nicaraguan grackle and many others, some of them even endemic to the area. Among the bigger species that can be observed are ocelots, tapirs, cayman, and more. Box lunch will be served at the wildlife refuge.

At this time the tour bus will take you back to the Tabacon resort were you may join the group that is doing the one day tour for dinner and a little relaxing at the hot springs.

All of this takes place in an enclosed garden where hundreds of butterflies, blue Morphos, "Owls" and many other species, fly freely. On export days, you will be able to see the sorting and packing of thousands of butterfly chrysalides. A delicious lunch will be served in a country restaurant.

The route that our tour follows has been considered by many as the best drive in Costa Rica. You will experience in one day (10 hours), what for most tourists would take three or four days to see and we will do it at a leisurely pace with no strenuous exercise. If these tours were purchased individually they would cost a total of over $200, which makes our combination tour price of $79 a real bargain. We have carefully designed our tour so that there are no long, tiring drives. Although you will find our air-conditioned tour bus very comfortable, you will spend more time out of it than in, as we make many stops. So sit back and enjoy your vacation as we pass through some of the most beautiful country sites that Costa Rica has to offer.

Our tour starts with an early morning pick-up at your hotel as we depart San Jose at 6:00 a.m. to start our upward journey to Poas volcano through a primeval tropical cloud forest. Before reaching the summit we will pass through country towns, coffee fields, dairy farms, strawberry, blackberry, fern and tropical flower plantations. There we stop for a typical country-style breakfast with fresh tropical fruit.

After a short walk through the forest we reach the the rim of the steaming crater.

At 9000 ft. (2700 m) Poas volcano is one of the largest active craters in the world.

After leaving Poas volcano we'll cross the continental divide passing many high volcanic edifices, jungle forest and streams. We will visit the famed La Paz waterfall and also stop en route to view the grand San Fernando waterfall.

As we drop down from the high country to the lowland eco-systems of the Caribbean plains you will witness the change in temperature and scenery. There will be plenty of time to stop and enjoy the spectacular scenery along the way. Before our next adventure we will have a delicious buffet lunch at one of the most beautiful jungle lodges in Costa Rica. There you will have a chance to enjoy a pleasant walk through the rainforest trails or to relax and spend some time on your own.

After lunch we will continue to the riverport town of Puerto Viejo, where we will take a two-hour Sarapiqui river cruise in a modern boat going through the tropical rainforest. During this trip we will be on lookout for iguanas, monkeys, crocodiles, sloths, turtles, and colorful birds, experiencing the impressive biological diversity of the rain forest that thrives along the banks of the river. In addition we will get a glimpse at the way of life of the natives in this remote area near Nicaragua as we drift past picturesque jungle homes, dugout canoes, banana plantations, children playing in the river and fishermen.

Once our tour bus leaves Puerto Viejo we'll stop for a coffee break before passing through the Braulio Carrillo National Park. Consisting of 109,000 acres, it is Costa Rica's second largest national park. Today, a recently inaugurated highway cuts right through the center of this tropical cloud forest providing visitors with tremendous sightseeing opportunities. Our arrival in downtown San Jose is about 6:00 p.m.

Visit one of the most exciting areas in Costa Rica, Tortuguero National Park. This is the most important area in the Western Caribbean for the nesting grounds of the green sea turtle (Chelonia Midas), which can be seen from July to September. This region abounds in rich flora and fauna. Its several waterways allow all kinds of life to grow and develop in a primary and secondary tropical rain forest. Orchids, birds, monkeys, crocodiles, sloths, toucans and many other species can be seen all over the area. A great way to spend three days in Costa Rica!

With its 47,000 acres of Primary Cloud and Tropical Rain Forest, this park offers a great variety of flora and fauna. The scenery along the way is indeed spectacular. You will see beautiful waterfalls, great canyons and huge mountains covered by almost impenetrable jungle. The climate of the area is very wet, so don't forget your rain coat. Boat ride on Sarapiqui river will complement the tour.

DL20 - Carara Biological Reserve and Jaco Beach

Leaving San Jose we head toward the Pacific Coast, along the old Spanish route of 1606, used by the Conquistadores and the first Costa Rican coffee exporters.

Carara Biological Reserve covers a low mountainous area of 4700 ha. that is considered one of the most fascinating reserves of tropical forest in Costa Rica. Its privileged location and altitude above sea level make of Carara a climatologically transitional zone that presents a combination of vegetation of our tropical dry forest to the north and the very humid forest to the south.

For bird lovers this is one place you should not miss. Among the birds that can be seen are: scarlet macaws, parrots, parakeets, guans, toucans, antbirds, trogons, tinamous, hummingbirds, woodcreepers, flycatchers, several species of falcons, etc. In terms of number of species per square kilometer, Carara is considered one of the best birding locations in Costa Rica.

Among the mammals that can be seen are: three out of the four species of monkeys, coatis, sloths, agoutis, deer, peccaries, porcupines, anteaters, coyotes, squirrels and many others; some of them, like the wild cats, are hard to see.

Reptiles and amphibians such as several species of snakes, crocodiles, iguanas, lizards, frogs and toads are also present. So are hundreds of insect species.

The giant trees seen standing out from the canopy, colorful blooms and a diversity of over 61 species of plants are some of the flora that Carara has to offer.

You will spend about three and a half hours inside the reserve, where our guide will instruct you in the different things you see. We will offer you breakfast after a one-hour hike, to later return to the reserve for the two and a half more hours. Then we will visit nearby Jaco Beach to offer you lunch. You will also have plenty of time to enjoy the beach and the swimming pool.

We leave the busy city into the mountains surrounding our Central Valley, with its varied vegetation and scenery of coffee fields, ornamental plants and typical Costa Rican towns. As we ascend we will witness the climatic changes that we have all over Costa Rica. The San Lorenzo canopy is located on a tropical forest reserve on a beautiful farm with orchids, bromeliads and other ornamental plants. The length of the wires is more than 7000 feet with 12 platforms in use at this time. The longest one in the country has 2550 feet span. At the platforms we will be able to explore the tropical forest and the impressive valley below. After the climb on the platform we will glide between posts. After we end our adventure, we will have an easy walk to the nearby restaurant for a good meal.

  4. Dos Libras S.A. reserves the right to alter the course of any tour if it is considered to be in the best interests of the tour. Dos Libras S.A. reserves the right to remove any individual from the tour without compensation if that person's conduct is deemed to the detrimental to enjoyment of other passengers.
  5. Dos Libras S.A. is only a mediator between the passenger and the companies or persons operating the service scheduled in the itineraries, such as transportation, companies, hotels, restaurants, etc. Consequently, Dos Libras SA. assumes no responsibility for deficiency, delay, personal accident or any other irregularity that may occur. However, all of our vehicles are fully insured. When other individuals or companies are used to provide service, their insurance and cancellation policies will take precedence over the above conditions.
